Processing: Data-Visualization and Computational Design

I have developed a passion for quantitative research methods, statistics, and data analysis in recent years and my only complain is that the data is usually presented in drastically unappealing charts and graphs, that is until data-visualization and computational design created a promising way forward. Computational design draws together quantitative research data and presents them in a stimulating and artistic manner.

Drawing inspiration from the We Feel Fine project by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar, I have done a little bit of digging on computational design and found an open source programming language Processing, an open source programming language to present data in interactive visual animation. This idea is not new of course, but with the popularization of Web 2.0 and the semantic web, we are seeing more and more computational design used to present mashups on the web.

It might be worth taking Ben Fry’s Processing course if you’re interested.
